The Martin Box~The Resurrection of an Historic Whaling Cottage in Siasconset on Nantcuket Island
“Referred to in family circles as ‘The house that Johnny built,’ this vintage whaling captain’s cottage (circa 1720) in Siasconset on the east end of Nantucket, now stands “resurrected” due to Herculean efforts by its owners, Peter and Carol Krogh with a little help from Cousin Johnny. It was perilously close to total ruination after having sunk 16” into the sand upon its ancient, rotted-out log foundation.
In 2003, it was literally hoisted into the air, the earth scooped out underneath, and a new concrete foundation was poured for support, essentially doubling the interior square footage by providing living space and mechanicals below grade. A lot of work went into the Martin Box, in keeping with its style and tradition.”
